“The Move” is only the first lane of the Manual, and my working notes already have 375+ possible entries: attacks, dodges, traps, retreats, frame-grabs, little argumentative goblins still waiting to be named properly. My notebooks have north of 2,600 possible entries jotted down across the entire manual.
About this project
The Argument Field Manual is a living guide to the recurring moves, frames, distortions, slogans, and reasoning-machines that show up in public argument.
It is not primarily a guide to winning arguments.
It is a guide to understanding what arguments are doing.
The goal is to give names to things you may already recognize by feel: the claim that changes shape halfway through, the definition that gets swapped midstream, the joke that suddenly becomes “just a joke,” the comparison that clarifies nothing but somehow steals the room, the slogan that compresses three bad assumptions into six confident words.
This project is being built in public.
You are not arriving after the museum opened. You are walking through while the exhibits are still being pinned, labeled, rearranged, and occasionally dragged back to the table because one of the legs was attached to the wrong animal fossil, or after further thought it’s better understood that butterfly wings do not in fact naturally belong on elephants.
Some entries are finished enough to use. Some are seeds. Some are field notes. Some are placeholders for concepts I know exist but have not fully dissected yet.
The manual will change as the fieldwork continues.
