The Move portion of the Argument Field Manual is about argument behavior.
Not the topic. Not the tribe.
Not whether the speaker has the right haircut, credential, flag, pronouns, podcast microphone, or moral cologne.
(° ͜ʖ°)⠀
The question here is simpler:
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
What is the argument doing? Is it:
Distorting the claim?
Moving the burden?
Capturing the frame?
Changing the standard?
Turning the conversation into a trap?
Making self-defense look like guilt?
Or is it dragging you into a tiny courtroom where the verdict was already sewn into the curtains?
This lane is for the mechanics of argumentative motion: attacks, dodges, retreats, pressure tactics, status moves, terrain grabs, and repair tools.
Use it when someone is not merely saying something false, but performing a maneuver.

AGGRESSIVE MOVES
Direct attacks, pressure, contamination, accusation.
Distortion Attacks are moves where the target is altered before it is attacked. The claim, representative, context, implication, or scope is quietly changed so that defeating the substitute appears to defeat the original. Strawmen, weakmen, nutpicking, quote mining, and similar moves all live here.
Distortion Attacks \ Pervert the claim, then attack the perversion
Strawman \ Attacking a distorted version of the claim.
Weakman \ Attacking the weakest representative of a position.
Nutpicking \ Treating the craziest example as the real argument.
Straw-Mascot Defense \ Weaponizes the cleaner version to make the critic look
Moral & Reputational Attacks Guide \ Make the speaker dirty, then pretend
Bad-Faith Accusation \ Claiming dishonesty to avoid the claim.
Mind-Reading Attack \ Claiming to know the hidden bad intent.

DEFENSIVE / EVASIVE MOVES
Dodges, retreats, deflections, refusal to be inspected.
Defensive Moves are not primarily attempts to defeat an argument—they are attempts to avoid being defeated by one. They redirect attention, retreat to safer positions, blur definitions, raise procedural obstacles, or otherwise make inspection difficult. Their common feature is escape rather than attack.
Retreats \ When inspection arrives, change what counts.
Motte-and-Bailey \ advancing a bold claim, then retreating to a safer one.
Goalpost moving \ Changing the standard after it is met.
Schrödinger’s Joke \ When a position becomes a superposition.
Deflections \ Point somewhere else, then pretend the claim was answered.
Whataboutism \ Dragging in another bad thing before answering this bad thing.
Tu Quoque \ Changing the question from “is this true?” to “are you clean?”
Argumental Hermit Crab \ Scuttling to a new reason-shell when the last one gets served an inspection warrant.

TERRAIN CONTROL MOVES
Control of frame, burden, scope, categories, standards, admissible evidence.
Terrain-Control Moves seek to decide the argument before the evidence is considered by controlling the battlefield itself. They determine the frame, burden of proof, categories, standards, scope, or admissible evidence so that one side begins with structural advantage.
Frame Control
• Frame Capture
CONVERSATION TRAPS
No-win setups, forced answers, rigged dialogue forma
Conversation Traps rig the format of the discussion itself. They create situations where every available answer carries a penalty, where hidden assumptions are smuggled into questions, or where the dialogue structure prevents honest inspection. The trap is in the conversation architecture rather than the individual claim.
