But I think you are totally missing the point with this post. The OP wrote "If you HAVE TO identify as a man..." The HAVE TO was load bearing. You failed to engage. Try harder next time.
Fair hit on “HAVE TO” being load-bearing, though I don’t think I failed to engage it so much as split it differently.
I was treating “have to” in the internal-consistency sense: if X is in fact my self-description, then I “have to” answer that way unless I lie or answer incoherently.
But you’re right that there’s another “have to” hiding there: social compulsion / compelled performance / demand for recognition. That version probably deserved its own little organ bucket on the autopsy table.
