When I am in a moral quandary, and I need guidance for figuring out what to do, I think “What would a rock do?” and then I remember that I’m not a rock. And whatever I do, is on me—not the rock.

That, to me, is the part moral realism often tries to escape. It wants morality to be discovered like geology, when most of the actual work of morality feels more like judgment under responsibility. The rock does not care. The universe does not sign the permission slip. We still have to choose, justify, revise, and live with the consequences.

A deflection does not usually say:

“I refuse to answer that.”

It says:

“But what about this other thing?”

“You do it too.”

“Okay, maybe that point failed, but what about this next shell I found on the beach?”

Now everyone is arguing near the issue, around the issue, emotionally adjacent to the issue — but not actually the issue.

None of this discounts, bans, or calls into question:

Sometimes those things matter. Sometimes the “other thing” really is relevant.

The question is:

Did the new issue help inspect the original claim, or did it help escape it?

That is the Deflection test.

What is Whataboutism?

Whataboutism is a deflection where one claim is avoided by pointing at a different wrongdoing instead of answering the one under inspection.1

How Whataboutism Works

Whataboutism introduces a second wrongdoing to pull attention away from the claim currently under inspection. The other problem may be real, serious, and worth discussing—but its existence does not answer the first claim.

The diagnostic question is not simply whether someone said “what about…” It is whether the comparison supplies relevant context, exposes a meaningful inconsistency, or merely opens a trapdoor beneath the original discussion. The move occurs when the conversation stops asking “Is this claim true?” and starts asking “Can I find another bad thing nearby?”

A second fire may deserve attention. It does not extinguish the first.

Whataboutism is not comparison.

Comparison can clarify.

Whataboutism evades.

The move works by dragging the conversation from the inspected claim to a different wrongdoing, usually one that carries enough emotional charge to steal the room’s attention.

The original issue does not get answered. It gets surrounded by cousins. Some which are several times removed.

The Load-Bearing Trick

Whataboutism depends on a hidden swap:

• Original question:
  Is this claim true? Did this thing happen? Is this behavior defensible?

• Replacement question:
  Can we find another bad thing that makes the critic look selective, hypocritical, or suspicious?

That replacement question may be interesting. It may even matter later. But it does not make the first question disappear.

You’ll Recognize This When…

The answer begins with:

“But what about…”

“Funny how you never mention…”

“Where was this energy when…”

“Your side does it too.”

“Interesting that you only care now.”

The tell is not the phrase itself. The tell is whether the new example is used to inspect the original claim or to avoid it.

Diagnostic Test

Ask:

“Does this other example change whether the original claim is true?”

• If yes, inspect the relationship.

• If no, park it.

Not everything adjacent gets to jump the line.

Variant:

Partisan Whataboutism: The deflection comes with an implied accusation of hypocrisy.

• Original focus: white/European/American slavery.

• Deflection: (black) Africans also sold Africans into slavery.

• Function: not to answer the original moral/historical claim, but to shift the moral center of gravity until the original moral/historical claim is either “they did it too”, or “they did something worse”.

In partisan whataboutism, the responding deflection is an accusation against the opponent or what/who they’re arguing for. An accusation that the subject of the opponent’s claim is guilty of committing the same offense first, or sometimes a far greater offense first.

Someone employing partisan whataboutism is attempting to reframe the original claim, or offense, into either being:

• A) Not only justified, but deserved because it was simply a response to being punched first.

• B) An offense of so much greater magnitude than the original claim that it dwarfs this very conversation.

This variant is a very common way whataboutism is encountered in the wild.

Try:

“That may be worth discussing separately. But does it answer this claim?”

Or:

“We can inspect that next. First: is the original criticism accurate?”

Or, if the person keeps flinging comparison confetti:

“You’re naming another possible wrong. You haven’t answered this one.”

What is a Tu Quoque?

Tu Quoque is Latin for “You do it too!" It happens when a person treats the critic’s hypocrisy as if it makes the criticism false.2

How Does This Move Work?

Tu Quoque answers a criticism by pointing back at the critic: “You do it too.” Rather than inspecting whether the criticism is true, the respondent shifts attention to the critic’s own behaviour. The accusation of hypocrisy may be accurate—but unless that hypocrisy changes the substance of the claim, it does not refute it.

How to build a Tu Quoque fallacy:

1. Person A criticizes Person B

2. Person B accuses Person A of doing the same thing

3. Person B treats that inconsistency as an answer, or refutation, of Person A’s criticism.

Sometimes that inconsistency really does matter. If a person’s hypocrisy tells us something about their sincerity, trustworthiness, motives, or willingness to live by the rule they are preaching, it can be relevant context.

But Tu Quoque becomes a fallacy when hypocrisy is treated as refutation.

A person’s inconsistency may weaken their credibility, but it does not automatically make their claim false. A hypocrite can still be right. A dishonest messenger can still deliver a true message.

The key diagnostic question is:

“Does the inconsistency actually change the truth of the claim, or is it just being used to dodge the claim?”

1. The person may be inconsistent.

2. The criticism may still be correct.

Some cries of “but, you!” are valid, but Tu Quoque becomes defective when inconsistency is treated as refutation.

Reality does not stop being true just because the messenger has dirty hands.

The Claim / Messenger Split

Tu Quoque gets power by welding two questions together:

Question 1: Is the claim true?

Question 2: Is the speaker consistent?

Those are not the same question.

A smoker can correctly say smoking is bad.

A reckless spender can correctly say debt is dangerous.

A corrupt politician can correctly identify corruption in someone else, though obviously you may want to keep one hand on your wallet while he does it.

Hypocrisy may reduce trust. It does not perform a tiny logical assassination on the claim.

You’ll Recognize This When…

The reply sounds like:

“You do it too.”

“Look who’s talking.”

“You’re one to talk.”

“That’s rich coming from you.”

“You only care when they do it.”

The move often arrives when the original criticism is uncomfortable but the critic has a convenient stain on their shirt.

So the stain becomes the trial.

Diagnostic Test

Ask:

“Would the claim still be true if someone less hypocritical said it?”

If yes, the hypocrisy is a side issue.

Possibly relevant. Possibly satisfying. Possibly hilarious.

Still a side issue.

Try:

“My consistency is a separate question. Is the claim accurate?”

Or:

“That may show I’m inconsistent. It does not show the argument is false.”

Or:

“Fine — inspect my hypocrisy next. First answer whether the criticism is true.”

The critic can be examined next. First, examine the criticism.

• Argumental Hermit Crab

What is an Argumental Hermit Crab?

An Argumental Hermit Crab is a deflection pattern where each failed reason is discarded for a new one — often while the original confidence remains unchanged.3

How This Move Works

The Argumental Hermit Crab is what happens when someone keeps changing the reason for their belief while preserving the same level of confidence.

It is not quite Goalpost Moving. The standard is not necessarily changing after being met.

It is not quite Motte-and-Bailey. The person is not necessarily retreating from a bold claim to a safer version of the same claim.

The crab is doing something stranger.

It abandons the current claim-shell when scrutiny gets uncomfortable, then crawls into a different claim-shell and acts as if the argument has been there the whole time.

The belief survives because the reasons were never the engine.

They were temporary housing.

The Hermit Crab Scuttle

The pattern looks like this:

1. Claim A is offered as the reason.

2. Claim A is inspected.

3. Claim A fails.

4. The argument crawls into Claim B.

5. Claim B is inspected.

6. Claim B fails.

7. The argument crawls into Claim C.

8. The confidence remains weirdly untouched.

The shell changes.

The certainty does not.

That is the animal.

Diagnostic Test

Ask:

“After the claim changed, did the confidence change with it?”

If the person’s certainty survives the collapse of every reason offered, then the reasons probably were not doing the real work.

The reasons were merely decorations on a conclusion that had already moved in and chained itself to the radiator.

You’ll Recognize This When…

Listen for:

“Okay, maybe not that, but…”

“Fine, but the bigger point is…”

“That specific example may be wrong, but…”

“You’re missing the pattern.”

“This is bigger than one claim.”

Sometimes the “bigger pattern” is real.

Sometimes it is just a fog machine with scuttly legs.

The tell is whether the person updates when each support beam snaps, or ignores it ever existed and walks you over to their next support.

Repair Move

Do not chase every shell forever.

Try:

“Before we move to the next claim, are you conceding the first one?”

Or:

“What changed in your confidence after that reason failed?”

Or:

“Let’s list the reasons one at a time. Which one is doing the actual work?”

If the crab keeps scuttling:

“You’re changing supports faster than we can inspect them. Pick the claim you actually want to defend.”

Let them know you see them crawling around the beach looking for a hiding spot.

Field Notes — Deflections

• Deflections are not always inappropriate.

• A deflection is not automatically false because it changes the subject.

• Sometimes the subject needed changing.

• Sometimes the first frame was too narrow, too rigged, too selective, too cute by half.

But when the original claim remains unanswered while attention gets dragged into a new arena, you are probably watching a deflection do its little subject-disappearing stage trick.

The core question is always:

“Are we clarifying the claim, or escaping it?”

If the answer is escaping it, return it to the inspection table.

The claim was right there.

It did not evaporate just because someone yelled “Squirrelcrab!” and ran into the dunes.

FAQ

1. What is a deflection in an argument?
   A deflection is a move that pulls attention away from the claim under inspection and toward some other issue. The new issue may be true, relevant, or worth discussing. The question is whether it helps inspect the original claim—or helps it sneak out the side door.
   

2. Is changing the subject always a deflection?
   No. Sometimes the frame is too narrow, important context has been excluded, or another issue genuinely changes how the claim should be understood. It becomes a deflection when the subject changes without the original claim being answered, clarified, or properly connected to the new one.
   

3. What is the difference between Whataboutism and Tu Quoque?
   Whataboutism points to another wrongdoing: “What about that bad thing?” Tu Quoque points to the critic’s own inconsistency: “You do it too.” Both can redirect attention away from the claim, but Tu Quoque specifically turns the critic’s hypocrisy into the attempted answer.

4. When is pointing out hypocrisy a legitimate response?
   When the hypocrisy is actually relevant to credibility, sincerity, incentives, authority, or the rule being proposed. It may show that someone does not believe their own sermon. What it does not automatically show is that the sermon is false.
   

5. How do you respond to a deflection without getting dragged into another argument?
   Acknowledge the new issue without surrendering the old one: “That may be worth discussing next. Does it answer the claim we were already examining?” Park the side issue, return to the inspection table, and do not chase every shiny accusation thrown into the room.

This is a good beginning.

Not because the critic is stupid. They are not. It is a good beginning because the objection walks directly into the center of this project: the place where ordinary words, confident definitions, and actual usage start grinding against each other.

I’ve anonymized the commenter because I do not know them, and this is not about making them the story. The person is incidental. The argument is not.

I know this argument well. I have seen it before in different clothes. It is the familiar move where someone treats a preferred definition as if it were not merely useful, but authoritative — as though reality itself has agreed to enforce it.

So:

• First critique received.

• Specimen is on the autopsy table.

• I’ve got

  • my cleaver,

Certainly! You detected that quite astutely. That was purposeful, though. What I am putting forward is that words do not have pure definitions — despite what Plato might’ve told you with his perfect forms. Prescribing language, like prescribing the soul of the perfect chair, is just fundamentally not how words work in spoken tongues.

In this realm, Wittgenstein > Plato.

Reject Plato and his silly object-souls, my friend. Perfect forms are silly. Prescriptive language is absurd. All the cool kids today follow Wittgenstein’s Family Resemblance understanding of words. Because it’s how language actually acts, and keeps every conversation from devolving into two people screaming about two different things at each other, thinking they’re talking about the same thing.

A word’s meaning relies on so many incredibly complex and varied nuances which are unique to every individual person, varying by culture, family communication, childhood interpersonal development, lived experiences, education, how sleepy they are when asked, and a bunch more aspects.

Every person’s view of a given word is unique to them. Neuro-linguistically speaking, we’re all unique snowflakes, my buddy.

I can point to a shoe and say “That’s a flibbidyfoo”, and, in that utterance, that shoe IS a flibbidyfoo.

If that seems silly, strange (it is, it is), think of local vernaculars. In local communities, words get changed to mean different things, become ‘you had to live there’ figures of speech, or are generated and passed around the community until some of them become the regular local customary terms for things.

If I lived in a little Oklahoman community of a few dozen hundred people, and some eccentric well-off town-clown opened a shoe shop 225 years ago, and insisted on calling them flibbidyfoos, until, eventually, it caught on — now for 200+ years, this little interconnected community of a few thousand people typically say “flibbidyfoo” instead of shoe when they’re talking to each other… does “flibbidyfoo” NOT mean shoe, to them, in their use of it? Is flibbidyfoo NOT their word for shoe?

And that’s the whole point. There is no universal, authoritative, prescriptive authority of “This word MUST refer to things that match these characteristics, and do NOT match these other ones”.

There are no cosmic police out there who will come down and demand you show your shame and pay penance for using a word in a way other than its one intended, allowed way, as though it is woven through the fabric of reality.

That just doesn’t exist in our world. Never has. Language is sloppy. You can make an argument that machines speak in more pure mathematics, I guess, but us homo sapes have sloppy tongues. You should hear the multilinguals!

Correct again, my guy! I kept it broad like female.

Or a chair of a meeting.

Or as the chair of Oxford’s department of political philosophy

Or as the leading position in an ensemble, e.g. “she plays first chair violin”

But hey, forget all that, did you know they’ve put chairs in those specific objects, our pants, these days? Modern times, amirite? “It IS the future!"

The number of legs is meaningless as a specific object though having a back is crucial. Backless it is a stool. Or a possibly a bench.

Look at this deal I found on a chair!

But what if it is?

Some prehistoric tribe had their most skilled artisan and his two sons carve intricate patterns out of the sea turtle’s shell after they evicted the rest of the turtle, and positioned it just right so that it served as their leader’s cave-throne for 200 years and three family dynasties. …are YOU going to tell that king he’s not sitting on a chair?

Or is it a chair because it’s been scooped out? What if the sea turtle was taxidermied and had an ass groove carved into its shell to sit on? Is it a chair now? What about before it was taxidermied? What about while it’s dying? What about if it’s a living turtle bound to the floor with a sittable ass-groove in its back for the king? Where does the magical chair essence depart? I contend that it doesn’t. Because chairs aren’t real. They’re abstracted sounds we make to represent the idea of a chair, and we all have different ideas. Your ideas are just that - your ideas. Tons of people around the world consider a wheelchair to be a chair. You deciding it is not a chair does not make it not a chair for those people.

The hot take of hot takes!

That’s its purpose when it’s used for that purpose. I had a family member who used a wheel not-a-chair, and many times its purpose was to hold my butt off the floor while I watched TV. Sometimes its purpose was to pop wheelies. It wasn’t a chair or a medical device then. … it was an ATV.

So if the four wheels of a wheelchair are replaced with legs, it is still not a chair, because it was originally designed to transport people and not keep them stationary, even tho it is being used as such now?

What if someone still pushes the four-legged replacement version and slides someone to a hospital on it? Did it stop being a chair? Just temporarily, or permanently? Was it a chair again when he stopped pushing the chair at red lights?

What if we glue little posts under each wheel??

First, say something intentionally cruel, dishonest, or obscene. Then, when someone reacts with normal human disgust, shock, or moral clarity, point directly at their reaction instead of your provocation.

“Awww, are you triggered, Snowflake?”

This is an active assault disguised as a composure test. The goal is to enforce a dominant rank through fake psychopathy, signalling that they are entirely unbothered by their own ugliness while you are weak for having basic human reflexes. In the illusion they are trying to put in place: they’re the serious ones dealing with facts, and you’re over there ‘stuck in your feelings’, unwilling and incapable of taking part in a serious facts-based conversation.

Wielding the pen requires thought, dexterity, and structural precision. When a bad actor drops raw malice and answers your natural human recoil with “Lol, triggered!”, they are swinging a blunt sword because they lack the cognitive competence to match your precision.

This maneuver is an act of rhetorical violence through attempted epistemic castration. It is a deliberate effort to strip away personhood and mute your voice by framing a healthy human reflex as a pathetic defect. They are not proving you are fragile; they are directly admitting their own cognitive impotence. They went with an intellectually flaccid maneuver because it was all they had to work with.

The Victim’s Trap

The trap springs the moment you accept their fake rule: If you show emotion, you lose the argument.

If you waste a single breath trying to prove how calm, detached, and objective you are, you have already surrendered your standing. You have allowed the offender to transform the conversation from an audit of their malice into an investigation of your sanity. You are playing on their terms, begging for a certificate of composure from a troll.

The Counter-Strike

Refuse the scale. A reaction cannot be audited for oversensitivity until the audience has measured the exact force of the boot.

If someone insults the colour of your shirt and you spend three days weeping in a dark room, your response is disconnected from reality. The reaction is the problem. But if someone kicks your dog into the stratosphere, shouting is not a sign of mental fragility. The shouting is empirical evidence that you understood the situation perfectly, and are reacting accordingly.

To execute the counterstrike, you must bypass the composure trap entirely and force their actual frame to stand trial in plain English. Analyze what they are laughing at and follow it through to its logical conclusion. If they mock your outrage over an act of raw malice, they are declaring that the capacity to care about cruelty is a design defect.

The troll trying to recast expressing your outrage as weakness lacks the basic psychological maturity to recognize moral conviction as strength.

They are attempting to dehumanize you, using a laugh track to camouflage a complete deficit of human empathy and distract from their refusal to advance their own positions or defend any of them from any criticism.

If “you reacted emotionally” automatically means “you lose”, then any cruelty can protect itself by provoking the very response it deserves.

Don’t defend your flinch. Strip away the camouflage, expose the performed psychopathy underneath, and audit their boot.

This quote is one of the most vivid examples I can think of, of a lived expectation — the background assumption of how other people will treat you — that I cannot really hold in my head empathetically, because I can’t accurately simulate it. It’s too alien from my own experience. My imaginings of “what it would be like” have extremely low reliability because the reality is both so extreme and so far outside anything I’ve ever experienced.

But even trying to get close enough to imagine that mental state… is viscerally revolting. With modern sensibilities, and Douglass’s words, you can feel how innately wrong even the direction of humans owning humans is.

It’s interesting to me, how clearly that feeling can come through, despite an inability to embody myself into what he went through in my mind’s eye. I think there’s something about being broken that leads to you coming back with a steel few other men can fully grasp.

Someone’s mindset, their experiences, and their assumptions about how the world will treat them have an incredible effect on not only WHAT they think, but HOW they think. Not “think” as in right or wrong. Think as in: from what direction.

Often, people in an argument are not simply disagreeing about the same thing. They are arguing from undeclared opposing directions, each passionately defending a different nuance, thinking they are arguing against each other when they are actually arguing parallel to each other.

What’s happening here?

This is not an argument against a real position.

It is a cartoon of a position, dressed up as a person nobly choosing to die for moral purity.

That is the move.

The opponent is not merely made wrong. They are made ridiculous, theatrical, sanctimonious, and self-sacrificial. They become someone who would rather roast alive than adapt to reality, because they are too trapped inside their own moral story to pick up the obvious umbrella.

That is not steelmanning. That is not even normal strawmanning.

That is building a straw-martyr.

• A strawman is a fake opponent built to lose.

• A straw-martyr is a fake opponent built to look like they are sacrificing themselves for a stupid moral performance.

The real air-conditioning debate is not:

America: use air conditioning.

Europe: die for the climate gods.

The real debate is more like:

Air conditioning is useful. Sometimes necessary. Sometimes lifesaving. Also, mass air-conditioning increases electricity demand, dumps heat outdoors, strains grids, and can worsen the broader problem if powered by fossil-heavy energy systems.

That does not mean “never use air conditioning.”

It means the serious answer involves better buildings, heat pumps, cleaner grids, insulation, public cooling infrastructure, smarter urban design, and not building a civilization where survival depends on every indoor room individually fist-fighting the atmosphere.

But that version is harder to ridicule.

So the opponent gets replaced.

Instead of engaging the tradeoff, the post invents a little moral lunatic and beats him to death with an umbrella.

This is why so much public discourse cannot move. People are not answering each other. They are manufacturing the version of the other side they most enjoy defeating.

The argument disappears.

The puppet remains.

And everyone claps because the puppet looked so stupid when it lost.

Some questions have divided families, ruined dinner parties, consumed comment sections, and caused otherwise ordinary people to begin speaking as though they are defending civilization from a fog machine.

So today, with the seriousness this topic deserves, we begin at the beginning.

PART I: The Sloppy Linguist

What is a chair?

We begin with the standard definition:

Brilliant.

Simple.

Clean.

Direct.

The kind of definition a person can say with confidence.

• You can sit on it, at least briefly (if you have no respect for turtles).

At this point, the Sloppy Linguist begins to sweat. Not because language has failed, but because the first patch was not designed to describe chairs. It was designed to exclude turtles.

The purpose of the definition has quietly changed.

It is no longer trying to help us understand the object.

It is trying to defeat the counterexample.

A normal speaker would say, “That’s not a chair, that’s a turtle!” and everyone would understand them. But the Sloppy Linguist cannot allow ordinary understanding to do its ordinary work. The Sloppy Linguist needs a perfect checklist. The Sloppy Linguist needs a definition so pure that no turtle can ever sneak through customs.

So the next emergency patch arrives.

The cursed taxonomic reality that comes with hostile precision over cooperative interpretation and establishing shared axioms.

The wooden chair has been expelled because the wood was once alive.

The wheelchair has been reclassified because the checklist cannot survive its wheels.

The definition has become so committed to protecting itself from turtles that friendly-fire has shot down the entirety of accessibility-furniture.

This is the point where a sensible person should stop and ask whether the definition is still serving language, or whether language has been chained to the radiator and is being pelted mercilessly with spare Oxford commas.

The required resolution depends on the job.

• A barista needs to know where the chairs go.
  

• A furniture designer needs measurements.
  

• A safety inspector needs load ratings.
  

• A moving company needs to know what can be stacked, lifted, wrapped, and charged for.
  

• A museum curator may care whether something belongs to a lineage of design.

None of these people are wrong for using different resolutions.

Philosophers would file this under Wittgenstein’s idea of words having “family resemblance”.

The turtle-chair disaster above shows the problem nicely: we kept looking for the one feature that all chairs must share, and every attempt either let in something stupid or kicked out something obvious.

• Four legs failed.
  

• Inanimate failed.
  

• Never alive failed.
  

• Wheels broke the machine.

That is where family resemblance becomes useful.

Some categories, or words (which are categories), hold together less like identical products from a factory, and more like relatives at a family reunion.

You may have:

• Your cousin’s chin-line,

• Your aunt Lucy’s eyes,

• Your father’s posture,

• Your uncle’s laugh, and, depending on the family,

• Your grandmother’s tail.

No single feature belongs to everyone. But the resemblance overlaps enough that nobody needs to discover the family’s secret metaphysical ingredient before recognizing the reunion.

A dining chair, a throne, a stool, a beanbag, a folding lawn chair, and a wheelchair work more like family resemblances than rigid hierarchies of meaning, whether the Sloppy Linguist wants to admit it or not:

They overlap.

• SOME chairs have legs.

• SOME chairs have backs.

• SOME chairs are movable.

• SOME chairs are built for one person.

• SOME chairs are mostly defined by sitting.

• SOME chairs are defined by the role they play in a room.

No single feature does all the work.

The word, or category, holds because enough features overlap in enough ordinary contexts for people to keep understanding each other.

If two people are arguing over an equation, but one of them thinks X means 4 and the other thinks X means 9, the problem is not the arithmetic, and no amount of mathing is going to get both sides to agreement. They can show their work all day long, use the same names for their different values—the entire time, never touching the same question.

Words work the same way.

Before people can argue about what follows from a word, they need some shared understanding of what the word is doing in the conversation.

• That does not mean definitions are useless.
  

• It means definitions are tools.
  And tools are judged by the work they are being asked to do.

I figured after that long article, we could all do with a little good ‘ol fashion objectifying:

Despite these impressive non-qualifications, the Engineer of All Trades is afflicted with a persistent need to understand how things work. Machines, arguments, workflows, websites, jokes, institutions, plumbing, dinner plans, social norms, Lego structures: all become systems with load, tolerance, failure modes, maintenance costs, hidden assumptions, and some poorly inspected little bracket everyone else is trusting with their lives… or their bathroom towels.

Engineer of All Trades

noun phrase — but I’m not going to waste your time pointing out something as useless as that - you can see what it is. You can read. You know how to use it.

• The term is not a credential claim.

• It’s a temperament claim.

An Engineer of All Trades is someone who, upon encountering nearly anything, immediately begins asking what it is doing, what it is bearing, what it is hiding, what will break first, and whether the whole arrangement can survive contact with the universe as currently configured.

Used in a sentence: “I invented the term ‘Engineer of All Trades’ because when I call myself one, it really annoys the real ring-bearers.”

pointed to a pattern I’ve seen, but never named: people making a point, conceding it when challenged, then moving to another point, conceding that too, until none of the individual claims survive scrutiny — but the original confidence somehow remains intact.

That is the,

Argumental Hermit Crab

The claim keeps abandoning one shell and crawling into another whenever the current one becomes uncomfortable.

This is not exactly Goalpost Moving. In Goalpost Moving, the standard changes after it has been met. It is also not exactly Motte-and-Bailey, where a provocative claim retreats into a safer, more defensible version. The Argumental Hermit Crab is slipperier than both. Its core move is not retreating to a stronger position. It is preserving the same emotional certainty while changing which claim is supposed to justify it.

The Argumental Hermit Crab Scuttle:

1. You inspect Claim A.

2. Claim A fails.

3. So the argument crawls into Claim B.

1. You inspect Claim B.

2. Claim B fails.

3. So the argument crawls into Claim C.

Eventually, you are no longer examining a coherent argument. You are chasing a creature through a pile of discarded shells it no longer cares to defend, much less acknowledge..

The diagnostic question is simple:

If someone’s certainty survives the collapse of every reason offered for it, then the reasons were probably never doing the real work. They were just temporary housing.

Watch for the little scuttle sideways: “Okay, maybe not that, but what about…”

A motte-and-bailey is advancing a bold claim, then retreating to a safer version when challenged.

What’s happening here?

The person advances a bold, aggressive, territory-grabbing claim. When challenged, they retreat to a safer, weaker, more defensible claim. Then, once the danger passes, the bold version mysteriously reappears wearing fresh lipstick and pretending nothing happened.

The bailey gets the applause.

The motte gets the defense.⠀

You’ll recognize this when…

The claim changes altitude under pressure. The first version sounds dramatic, expansive, and consequential. The defended version sounds obvious enough that disagreeing with it makes you look like you eat crayons recreationally.

The move depends on treating the safe version as if it proves the bold version.

Why it matters:

Motte-and-bailey arguments let bad claims borrow the credibility of good ones. They expand aggressively, defend modestly, and then expand again once everyone gets tired.

This makes debates slippery. You think you are challenging “X is violence,” and suddenly you are being asked why you deny that words have effects. Nice little claim you had there. Shame if someone replaced it mid-sentence.

Goalpost moving is changing the required standard after the previous standard has been met.

What’s happening here?

The standard was met, so the standard moved. The person asked for one thing, received it, then quietly upgraded the demand because the original demand was only useful while unmet.

This is argument Calvinball. The rules are never the same twice, and they always become whatever prevents the other person from scoring.

You’ll recognize this when…

A person keeps saying “that’s not enough” without defining what enough would be before the evidence appears.

The demand becomes more specific, more extreme, or more impossible each time the critic satisfies the last version.

Why it matters:

Goalpost moving turns honest debate into a treadmill. You can run perfectly and still go nowhere because the other person controls the scenery.

The practical cost is exhaustion. People stop presenting evidence not because the evidence is weak, but because every answer generates a new entrance fee.

• Schrödinger’s Joke

Schrödinger’s Joke is retreat move where a claim, accusation, or implication is held to while it works, then becomes “just a joke” when someone tries to inspect it.

When someone’s position becomes a superposition:

The joke is doing argumentative work until someone tries to inspect it, and then it collapses into one or the other—whichever favours the joker.

Schrödinger’s Joke:

1. Frames the critique.

2. Implies a motive.

3. Pushes a political interpretation into the room.

4. Once challenged, the implication suddenly becomes weightless: not a claim, not an accusation, not a frame — it was just a joke.

That is the retreat.

The joker wants the joke treated as meaningful when it lands, but unserious when it costs something.

Schrödinger’s cat existed in both states — dead and alive — until someone opened the box and resolved the two states into one.

Here, the joke is both “a real point” and “obviously not serious”. Audience reaction, or social blowback, decides which version appears when the box is opened.

If the room likes it,

⠀it was a sharp observation.

If someone objects,

⠀it was comedy,
⠀and the objector is now on trial for failing to laugh correctly.

The claim becomes whatever costs less after the box opens.

You’ll recognize this when…

The joker wants the benefit of the implication without the burden of defending it.

The joke has a clear target, accusation, frame, or political meaning—right up until someone asks whether that meaning is actually being claimed.

Then the conversation shifts from:

“Is that claim true?”

to:

“Why are you so weird about jokes?”

The original claim walks out the back door. The critic gets dragged into a tiny comedy tribunal where the charge is Failure to Laugh Correctly.

Why it matters:

Schrödinger’s Joke turns humour into a one-way valve.

• Meaning goes out.

• Responsibility does not come back in.

This matters because jokes can absolutely make claims.

They can

• present patterns,

• compress criticism,

• reveal rationalizations,

• puncture pomposity,

• and make facts felt faster than abstract arguments can.

Jokes are powerful because they can move meaning faster than argument. A joke is not exempt from communication just because it is funny. The question is not only what the words literally said. The question is what the joke made available to believe.

Smuggling a secret, even hostile, meaning inside a joke gives the joker several social advantages of comedy:

delivery, charm, deniability, group laughter, and pressure on anyone who objects. The person challenging the claim can then be made to look like the problem—not because they misunderstood the joke, but because they understood it clearly enough to ask what it was doing.

The two-audience trick:

Schrödinger’s Joke often speaks to two audiences at once.

• To critics, the retreat says: you cannot prove I meant it.

• To supporters, the retreat says: you and I both know I meant enough of it.

That is why “I was joking” does not always erase the original message.

Sometimes it protects the joker from outsiders while strengthening the bond with insiders.

The critic hears a denial,

The fan hears a wink.

The joke keeps traveling after the official meaning has been recalled.

What this isn’t:

This is not every edgy joke, every failed joke, or every instance of sarcasm. Any of those can become a Schrödinger’s Joke, but only when the joker uses “just joking” to protect a claim-like meaning from inspection.

• A joke can be offensive without being a Schrödinger’s Joke.

• A joke can make a point without being evasive.

• A joke can land badly without becoming a retreat move.

The diagnostic question is not:

“Did someone dislike the joke?”

The diagnostic question is:

Was the joke allowed to imply a claim, then protected from inspection by pretending it was never claim-like at all?

Variants:

Claim-smuggling joke:

The joker floats an unpopular, aggressive, or socially risky claim as humour. If the room accepts it, the claim gets to live. If the room rejects it, they retreat into “obviously joking”.

Schrödinger’s Douchebag:

The troll variant. Here the point is not just to smuggle the claim. The point is to provoke a reaction, then turn that reaction into the punchline. The target becomes “too sensitive”, “triggered”, “hysterical”, or “unable to take a joke”.

The difference is usually functional more than provable. You do not need to mind-read the joker’s soul. Watch what the move is doing.

• One version uses the joke as a shield.

• The other uses the joke as bait.

Common disguise:

• “Relax, it was a joke”

• “Wow, people really can’t handle satire anymore”

• “I didn’t realize I needed to put /s after everything”

• “You’re proving the joke right”

Common escalation:

The retreat becomes an accusation.

Instead of defending the implied claim, the joker attacks the person who noticed it. The issue is no longer what the joke said. The issue is whether the critic is uptight, censorious, fragile, politically correct, humourless, or secretly guilty.

The joke goes into witness protection.

The joker puts on a robe.

The critic goes on trial.

The Joke-Meaning Test:

“Just joking” is not the end of inspection.

It is the start of translation.

Ask:

• What did the joke require the audience to understand?

• What belief, accusation, or frame made it funny?

• If it was sarcasm, what was the opposite meaning?

• Does that opposite meaning actually fit the context?

If the joke only works by smuggling the claim it later denies, that’s the retreat.

Repair move:

The joker’s move is to hide the claim inside the joke. The repair move is to analyze the joke without letting “it was a joke” end the inspection.

Analyzed jokes lose their humour, but that is not a defect here. Not every message carried by a joke was meant only for entertainment.

“Fine, it was a joke. What was the joke saying?”

Then press the translation:

“What did the joke invite people who ‘got it’ to believe?”

In many cases, that question cannot be honestly answered without revealing the claim they were trying to keep deniable.

A bad-faith accusation claims dishonest intent in order to avoid answering the argument itself.

What’s happening here?

The claim has been moved off the inspection table and replaced with a character trial. Instead of answering what was said, the accuser claims to know the hidden corruption behind why it was said.

Maybe the person really is acting in bad faith. That happens. We have all met humans. But “bad faith” is not a magic phrase that turns mind-reading into evidence.

The conversation shifts from:

“Is this claim true?” to “What kind of person would say this?”

It often arrives right when the claim becomes inconvenient, especially when answering it would require admitting that an enemy has made a structurally valid point. Unacceptable. Straight to motive jail.

Why it matters:

Bad-faith accusations are sometimes accurate, but they are also wonderfully convenient. They let people skip the difficult work of argument inspection and go directly to reputational quarantine.

This is how groups preserve bad beliefs. They do not have to refute the objection if they can make asking it socially radioactive.

It’s a Bad-Faith Accusation when:

• There’s an accusation of dishonesty or insincerity, not merely error.

• The accusation is treated as reason to avoid the claim.

• The accuser claims to know the person is pretending, hiding, or arguing dishonestly.

• The conversation shifts from “Is this claim true?” to “Can this person be trusted?”

• The evidence is mostly suspicion, convenience, tribal odor, or “come on, we all know.”

It’s NOT a Bad-Faith Accusation when:

• The claim is still inspected separately from the person’s sincerity.

• The criticism is about the argument’s structure, not the person’s honesty.

• Someone says the argument is wrong, weak, confused, or misleading without claiming dishonest intent.

• Denial becomes proof: “See? Now you’re pretending.”

• Clarification becomes cover: “Now you’re trying to make it sound innocent.”

• Mind-Reading Attack

A mind-reading attack claims to know someone’s hidden intent, motive, belief, or meaning, effectively avoiding inspecting what they actually said.

What’s happening here?

The claim makes a category distinction: criticism is not the same thing as threat.

The reply does not answer that distinction. It invents a hidden wish inside the speaker: you want someone hurt, and you are hoping your words become a signal. The argument has been moved from public claim to private interior.

Maybe the person really does have some ugly motive.

That happens. Humans have basements.

But motive is not a substitute for argument. Even a guilty mind does not change whether the stated claim is true—the statement still has to be inspected on its own terms.

Why it matters:

Mind-reading attacks make suspicion do the work of evidence. Once hidden intent becomes the real issue, the claim can be ignored, denial can be treated as concealment, and the accused person gets trapped defending an imaginary interior instead of the argument they actually made.

It’s a Mind-Reading Attack when:

• The target’s hidden intent or meaning is assigned, not shown.

• The mind-reader treats the accusation as known fact.

• The accusation damages the target’s moral standing or reputation.

• The conversation shifts from claim inspection to inner-life prosecution.

• The evidence is mostly suspicion, vibe, pattern-assumption, or “we all know.”

It’s NOT a Mind-Reading Attack when:

• The claim itself is being distorted; that routes closer to Strawman or another Distortion Attack.

• The inference is cautious, evidence-based, and left open to correction.

You’ll recognize this when…

The magic phrase is usually some version of:

“I know what you really mean.”

“That’s not what this is actually about.”

“I’m just reading between the lines.”

“You don’t really care about that.”

“People like you always mean…”

At that point, the argument has left the inspection table and entered the tiny courtroom inside the accuser’s imagination.

• Denial becomes proof: “Of course you’d say that.”

• Clarification becomes evasion: “Now you’re trying to clean it up.”

• Evidence demand becomes guilt: “You want me to prove what everyone can see.”

Ask the mind-reader to separate three things:

1. What was actually said.

2. What hidden intent they are assigning.

What’s happening here?

The person is not answering the claim. They are building a worse, dumber, easier-to-kill version of the claim, stapling your name to its shirt, and then attacking that instead. This is debate taxidermy: technically shaped like your argument, but dead, stuffed, and posed for their convenience.

A strawman is attacking a distorted version of a claim instead of the claim actually being made.

You’ll recognize this when…

Someone begins with “So you’re saying…” and then says something you did not say, would not say, and may have explicitly ruled out before their little argument-cartoon was wheeled onto the stage.

It often turns a limited claim into an absolute one, a causal claim into a moral confession, or a criticism of one thing into hatred of an entire category.

Why it matters:

The strawman is one of the basic units of public nonsense because it rewards speed over accuracy. It lets the attacker feel brave while fighting a cardboard cutout they made during arts and crafts.

Miss it, and the conversation becomes a trial over a position nobody holds. Then everyone wastes ten minutes arguing about whether you hate puppies, democracy, medicine, or whatever other hostage got dragged into the room.

• Weakman

A weakman is attacking the weakest representative of a position while pretending you have answered the position itself.

• Nutpicking

Nutpicking is treating the craziest or most extreme example of a group or position as representative of the whole.

The outlier becomes the embassador

The craziest available example is being treated as the real argument. The nut is picked, polished, framed, and introduced to the audience as the official ambassador.

It is weakmanning with a special fondness for lunacy. A specimen hunt where the hunter only shoots the diseased squirrel and calls it “the forest.”

You’ll recognize this when…

A person uses a fringe voice, deranged comment, weird protest sign, or high-engagement freakout as proof of what “these people” believe.

The giveaway is that the example is doing two jobs at once: representing the group and disgusting the audience.

How to: Build a Nut Into a Mascot

1. Take a population: A large, varied group or position.

2. Select a specimen: The weirdest, loudest, ugliest, most shareable outlier.

3. Representation swap: Treat the outlier as the central case.

4. Emotional payload: Foment disgust at the individual to do the work that evidence should be doing.

5. Result: The audience thinks it has inspected the group when it has only met the group’s least stable raccoon.

Some Nuts Matter

The nut is not automatically irrelevant. It becomes nutpicking when visibility gets laundered into representativeness.

An extreme example can matter if it is influential, widely endorsed, institutionally protected, predictive of a wider pattern, or treated as legitimate by the group’s actual center of gravity.

Nutpickers usually skip that work. They grab the most shareable lunatic, staple extra lunacy onto the specimen through exaggeration or selective framing, and call the resulting little goblin scarecrow “their movement”.

A hysterical “Nut” of a passenger shouting about their concerns may be terrible evidence for the emotional health of your car—but they may still be providing excellent evidence that an oncoming truck is drifting into your lane.

Why Nutpicking matters

Nutpicking turns public reasoning into a freakshow economy. Whoever can find the most embarrassing outlier wins the emotional weather.

It also destroys your ability to see the sane version of a view. Once the nut becomes the mascot, every ordinary person nearby gets judged by association. That is not thinking. That is contamination with screenshots.

• Endorsed: Do meaningful authorities, members, institutions, or normal participants defend it?

• Merely visible: Is it just loud, weird, viral, or algorithmically delicious?

A nut may prove that the nut exists. The Centrality Check asks whether it proves anything about the tree.

• Straw-Mascot Defense 

A Straw-Mascot Defense is an offensive tactic, replacing your side’s real, uglier conduct with a harmless mascot version, then using that mascot to portray critics as unreasonable, cruel, hysterical, or dishonest.

What got weaponized?

A Straw-Mascot Defense starts with a self-strawman, but then adds a counterattack.

1. The Substitution

First, the real conduct gets replaced with a harmless mascot version.

2. The Reroute

Then, criticism of the real conduct is reframed as an attack on the mascot.

3. The Erased Target

So, while the critic was objecting to the broader demand structure, pressure campaign, institutional leverage, or punishment logic.

4. Mascot Swap

⠀⠀⠀The defender swaps in:
⠀⠀⠀• “A polite student”
⠀⠀⠀• “A lunch complaint”
⠀⠀⠀• “Someone raising concerns”
⠀⠀⠀• “A vulnerable person asking to be heard”

5. The Reversal

Now, The critic looks cruel, obsessive, hysterical, or dishonest.

This move works because the critic now has to either 1) Fight the mascot and look deranged, or 2) Spend three paragraphs dragging the actual target back into the room.

The Mascot Swap

Real object:
The actual demand, conduct, campaign, pressure, or institutional leverage.

Mascot version:
The cutest, smallest, most sympathetic representative of the behavior.

Moral reversal:
The critic becomes the aggressor for objecting to the mascot.

The trick:
The mascot is not the thing being criticized. It is the thing being protected by the criticism’s misdirection.

Field Test

Ask:

Is this the actual target of criticism, or the mascot version placed in front of it?

Also:

Who benefits if the debate stays focused on the mascot?

The tell is:

“You’re mad about that?”

Where that is not actually the thing being criticized.

Other cues:

“Why are you attacking this person?”
“They only said…”
“It was just one complaint.”
“You people are obsessed.”
“Imagine being angry about this.”

Separate the mascot from the target.

“That is not the object of criticism. That is the mascot version of it.”

3. TERRAIN CONTROL MOVES

   Control of frame, burden, scope, categories, standards, admissible evidence.

   Terrain-Control Moves seek to decide the argument before the evidence is considered by controlling the battlefield itself. They determine the frame, burden of proof, categories, standards, scope, or admissible evidence so that one side begins with structural advantage.

4. CONVERSATION TRAPS

   No-win setups, forced answers, rigged dialogue forma

   Conversation Traps rig the format of the discussion itself. They create situations where every available answer carries a penalty, where hidden assumptions are smuggled into questions, or where the dialogue structure prevents honest inspection. The trap is in the conversation architecture rather than the individual claim.

But it is not…nonsense…..it is sense!

Or maybe it is nonsense.

But even nonsense can enter your head as a joke…and start reorganizing how you see things.

With this conceptual-linguistic mind-tool installed, you start noticing it everywhere: in arguments, identity, politics, science, language, intelligence, personality, species, systems, and every other place humans try to draw hard lines through moving reality.

That is why I like it.

Not just because it’s funny.

Because it names a thing a mind—that is paying attention—can notice:

The fight as old as clubs and loincloth

Here’s a question humans have been getting into bar-fights over since we first started pointing at things and grunting nouns at them:

Is reality prickly?
Is it made up of a bunch of separate objects, hard edges, named units, countable marbles?

Or is it gooey?
Is reality made of fields, flows, gradients, continuums, relationships, fuzz, motion, process, soup?

Is Earth marble?
or
Is Earth soup?

The correct answer is, as is often true, annoying.

• The answer is Yes.

• Additionally, the answer is No.

• Also, stop asking the question like that.

Reality is not simply a load of prickles or piles of goos. Our understanding of whether something is prickly or gooey depends on the resolution we’re looking at it at.

It depends on where we draw the boundary.

The universe: the supreme prickle

From one level of resolution, the universe is one thing.

One big prickle.

The universe.

A thing.

There it is. We named it. You could hold it in your hand, provided you have a sufficiently large hand.

But change the lens, and the one thing stops looking like one thing. It becomes galaxies, stars, planets, dust, radiation, gravity, dark matter, CME microwave background leftovers, and whatever else the universe has hiding between God’s couch cushions.

And all of this — known and unknown — is threaded through an incomprehensibly vast web of filaments, like strands of spider silk made of strings of galaxies.

Think you can hold that in your hand?
With or without your sufficiently large one?

Have you ever tried to grasp a spider web in your fist?

If you have, you’d make a terrible real-estate agent for the arachnid community.

Our single prick of a universe is also, when you refocus on its insides, a soup of gooey cosmos.

A universe-sized smear of interacting stuff.

Too much relation, motion, and scale to hold as a simple object.

The Sun: death-orb, tomato-engine, prickle

Then a star becomes a thing.

Our Sun.

One prickle.

Big yellow DNA smasher. Superman-food. Our perpetually exploding radiation explosion. A lovely floating nuclear furnace that gives us tomatoes and skin cancer.

At one resolution, “the Sun” is a perfectly sensible object.

You can look at it.

Not for long, sure, but you can look.

There it is: the Sun.

A thing.

But change the lens again, and the Sun stops being the whole subject.

It becomes the central region of mass and forces inside a much larger goo.

The solar system. What I thought, as an amateur child-physicist, was the answer to the question: “what would happen if a galaxy and an atom had a baby?”

So now, the relevant reality is not just “the Sun,” but orbits, gravity wells, radiation pressure, planets dragging moons around, tides, asteroid paths, orbital resonances, impacts, dust, billions of rocks, and trillions of frozen snowballs.

Throw in the internal forces, fields, and overlapping warpings of spacetime from every object of mass in the system, and “the Sun” is no longer the right-sized answer.

You need the whole gravitational and electromagneticalal mess.

“The Sun” is still real.

But if the question is about the solar system, a magnifying glass made to study sunspots is the wrong-sized tool to get the right-sized answer.

Sometimes the prickle is real, but the system it sits inside is the thing you actually need to understand.

The Sun is a prickle.

The solar system is goo.

Same reality. Different resolution.

Earth: marble, soup, wet argument-rock

And then there’s the Earth.

Another prick.

Our planet. Our blue marble. Our giant wet space-rock covered in all manner of life…loving and eating each other. Usually as separate events—but disturbingly, not exclusively.

Home of the humans — themselves a different layer of Earth’s prickles.

Zoom in.

Refocus.

Train the lens around Earth and the prickle dissolves into atmosphere, oceans, tectonic plates, bacteria, weather systems, borders, languages, supply chains, arguments, forests, fungi, mating rituals, and comment sections.

Goo.

People: Prickle Peter picked a peck of peppered pickle prickles

Back to our people-prickles.

Rob’s a prickle.

Becky’s a prickle.

Even Santa’s a prickle. Real or not, he’s a concept (as we all are to each other)—and so a discrete, definable, sensible prickle.

The three of them are absolute units. We all are:

One body.

One name.

One legal identity.

One set of two kidneys (or one lonely one).

But what happens when you crack open a human?

⚠️ Warning: Do not crack humans open unless properly certified, insured, and licensed by the state.

Inside a human, there lies a cornucopia of organs, fluids, cells, connecty-bits, bacteria, electrical impulses, memories, moods, childhood, caffeine, hormones, trauma, language, blood sugar, social incentives, and a hundred thousand little systems all pretending to be one coherent “I.”

Our prickly humans have become gooey again.

Goo made up of systems of prickles.

Cells: prickles.

Molecules: prickles.

Atoms: very satisfying prickles. Like little billiard balls. Tiny solar systems as seen in textbooks, chemistry posters, and felt in vibes.

But atoms betray us.

They stop being tiny marbles. They become fields, probabilities, distributions, charges, excitations, uncertainties — a subatomic haze of:

“It’s right there. Well, sort of… it depends on what you mean by ‘where’.”

Goo again.

The trick is the lens

That is the trick: not choosing goo or prickles, but noticing the lens.

The same reality can become thing-like or process-like depending on the resolution you are using to look at it.

That is why the phrase works. It gives the mind a handle for the moment when the thing you were holding as an object suddenly turns into a process — or the process you were drowning in suddenly resolves into something you can point at.

Alan Watts said it better:

Watts said this more playfully than I ever could. This video, made by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, somehow made it look exactly as stupidly-coherent and absurdly-brilliant as it deserves to look.

Both little monsters are true.

The mistake is assuming the resolution you are using can describe a thing at every level.

The boundary is not fake

A prickle is what reality looks like when the human mind has drawn a useful boundary around some part of the world.

Goo is what reality looks like before, beneath, between, beyond, or overflowing the boundary.

A chair is not fake because, at another level of resolution, it is atoms, and at another level of resolution, mostly empty space — and only at one useful human level of resolution, an object that makes sitting anatomically legible.

It is the difference between:

“Take a seat, so we can chat a while.”

and:

“Align the various interlaced matrices of matrices making up the outer fabric of material you’re wearing with the horizontal plane of the molecule matrix of that chair and come to a form of kinetic stasis with it, so we can chat a while.”

A chair is real enough.

But “real enough” is doing a lot of work there.

That is the useful part.

A thing does not need to be ultimate to be real enough.

A boundary does not need to be eternal to be useful.

A name does not need to capture the whole of reality to help us move through one layer of it without falling on our face.

Why this matters

Without boundaries, we die.

If you cannot determine:

1. This thing belongs in the bucket I have named “yummy berry”.

2. This thing belongs in the bucket I have named “hungry-looking wolf”.

Then your philosophical commitment to the gooey-continuity of nature will be admired briefly by the wolf.

Life requires us to draw lines. Make buckets. Categorize reality.

Food. Danger. Friend. Enemy. Tool. Person. Dog. Debt. Fire. Mine. Yours. Poison. Medicine. Machiavellian. Canadian.

These lines let the brain move through the world without recomputing existence from first principles every time something enters the visual field.

If every object required full metaphysical analysis before action, you would still be standing in your kitchen trying to decide whether the spoon is truly a spoon or merely a culturally reinforced scoop-prickle imposed upon metallic utensil-goo.

Eventually you would starve.

So no, boundaries are not the problem.

The problem is forgetting that boundaries are drawn.

That is where arguments go bad.

Someone points at a fuzzy pattern and speaks as if they have identified a hard edge.

Someone points at a statistical tendency and treats it like an essence.

Someone points at a social label and treats it like a biological species.

Someone points at a biological pattern and pretends it has no social meaning.

Someone points at a political camp and talks as if millions of people — internally divided, contradictory, confused, half-informed, emotionally motivated, and badly caffeinated — are one creature with one brain and one evil plan.

That is not thinking.

That is looking with the wrong resolution setting.

When one resolution rules them all

Sometimes treating something as a prickle helps.

Sometimes treating it as goo helps.

Both can be employed to analyze the same thing, depending on what you’re trying to understand.

This distinction matters because:

Once one resolution of understanding becomes familiar (then comfortable (then habitual)), people may stop checking whether it still fits the thing they are looking at.

• They stop asking what becomes visible at another scale.
  

• They stop asking what disappears when the thing is treated as solid.
  

• They stop asking whether the “thing” they are pointing at is actually a gradient, a cluster, a process, a relationship, a temporary pattern, or a moving system that only looks object-like from one angle.

And once that happens, language stops being a tool for understanding reality and becomes a tool for pinning reality down while it struggles.

This is where a lot of public argument lives now.

Not in disagreement over evidence.

That would be intellectually luxurious.

A great deal of modern argument happens one layer earlier:

People are using different resolution settings and pretending they are looking at the same object.

One person says:

“This is clearly a thing.”

The other says:

“No, it’s obviously a process.”

The first says:

“You deny reality.”

The second says:

“You worship labels.”

Then both sides spend three days clubbing each other with nouns while the goo leaks quietly through the floorboards, taking the prickles with them.

Illustrative examples — (simulated thought-bubbles):

“Wait — we started by talking about one bad law. Now we’re arguing about whether the entire political movement behind it is evil, stupid, corrupt, or secretly controlled by lizard accountants.”

“Well sure… at the task level, she made a mistake. At the workflow level, the system was designed to produce that mistake eventually.”

“Hold on. If we treat this as one sentence, it sounds harmless. If we treat it as one instance in a repeated pattern, the thing changes shape.”

“Hey — they’re only talking about the proposed policy’s claims and refusing to acknowledge the knock-on effects that implementing it will have on incentives, enforcement, courts, budgets, voters, agencies.”

Check the resolution

The useful move is to ask what level of description you’re standing on.

• At what resolution is this a thing?
  

• At what resolution does it become a process?
  

• At what resolution does that process become made of things again?

That is the tool.

Not “everything is complicated,” which is usually just intellectual fog machine behaviour.

Not “nothing is real,” which is just metaphysics having a lazy day.

Not even the great “common sense says…”, often said by people speaking in an entirely different layer of goo or prickles than you.

The tool is simpler:

The world is not obligated to fit the resolution setting of your argument.

Sometimes a thing is real at one scale…and misleading at another.

Sometimes an edge is sharp enough for practical use…and fuzzy enough to make every absolutist sound like an old man yelling at a cloud for its mist-ifying behaviour.

Because humans need names. We need edges. We need stable, describable prickles. Drawing these boundaries helps us live life as an everyday human, because we cannot live in raw goo. We would drown in the detail.

But the world does not stop being gooey just because we drew a prickle around part of it.

• The mind does not become wise by gripping the prickle harder.
  

• The mind becomes useful when it remembers what a prickle is doing.

1. Reality gives us patterns.
   

2. We draw boundaries:
   

   • Sometimes the boundaries help.
     

   • Sometimes they fail.
     

   • Sometimes they change when the lens changes.
     

   • And sometimes, if you’re lucky, a joke sentence waddles in wearing cartoon spikes and goo’d-back hair and reminds you that the world is not made at one resolution.

About this project

The Argument Field Manual is a living guide to the recurring moves, frames, distortions, slogans, and reasoning-machines that show up in public argument.

It is not primarily a guide to winning arguments.

A normal human brain is an absurd machine.

You carry around, inside your skull, a warm little primate supercomputer made of meat and lightning. It can model the future, remember betrayal, detect contradiction, imagine another person’s point of view, build tools, bury its dead, invent language, discover radiation, write poetry, and then — because apparently the universe likes irony — use that same machinery to argue online that a screenshot of a headline is “basically research.”

And we’re all full of the same brains.

The range is impressive.

But the machine itself is rarely the problem.

Most public nonsense does not require genius to detect. It doesn’t require a PhD. It doesn’t require a 142 IQ. It doesn’t require owning a personal library arranged by philosopher and beard gloriousness.

One hundred points is enough to notice when a conclusion has disguised itself as evidence. It is enough to notice when someone changes the subject and hopes the momentum carries them through the intersection. It is enough to ask, “What would have to be true for this claim to make sense?” And it is enough to ask the most dangerous ordinary question available to a thinking person: “Wait. Does my side get away with this too?”

That last one is where the machine starts smoking. Not because it cannot perform the operation. Because the operator refuses.

IQ isn’t nothing. It’s just not everything.

IQ measures something. I’m not pretending it measures nothing, because that is its own kind of cope wearing a lab coat made of feelings.

It’s that it has narrow uses. It can help predict certain kinds of academic performance. It can matter for certain kinds of work. It can tell us something about some forms of cognitive horsepower: pattern recognition, abstraction, working memory, verbal manipulation, speed, the ability to solve little puzzles while a test clock breathes on your neck.

Fine.

But the mistake is treating IQ like a high-resolution scan of the human mind. It’s not that. It’s closer to one useful gauge on a pilot’s flight console. Useful, but that’s not the whole plane.

Human intelligence is not one integer. It’s not one clean ladder where the people above you automatically reason better and the people below you automatically reason worse. Intelligence is a messy bundle of capacities: memory, attention, curiosity, verbal skill, spatial sense, social perception, patience, self-correction, imagination, discipline, and the ability to notice when your argument is quietly being held together with vibes and tribal duct tape.

This is why the public use of IQ is so often ridiculous. People take a limited tool with some legitimate applications and start waving it around like a divine scoreboard.

That is not thinking. That is sorting.

And sorting is what people do when thinking feels too expensive.

Smart people can be wrong with better vocabulary

High IQ can help someone reason. It can also help someone rationalize.

But that’s a sword with a couple of sharp sides.

A smarter person may see patterns faster. They may build abstractions more easily. They may move pieces around in their head with more precision. Those are very useful strengths.

But if the destination is corrupted, a better engine just gets you to the wrong place faster.

A smart person with a broken frame does not become wise. He becomes efficient at being wrong. He can defend a bad conclusion with footnotes. He can build a little cathedral around a false premise. He can use cleverness as a lockpick to escape every uncomfortable implication before it reaches the part of the brain where honesty lives.

This is not reasoning. This is self-protection with a thesaurus.

But reasoning is not only horsepower. It’s also steering. It’s brakes. It’s the willingness to notice that the road you chose because your friends were cheering may, in fact, lead directly into a swamp.

Politics is where this becomes most obvious, because politics has a special gift for turning functioning adults into cognitively short-circuited team mascots.

People who can understand complicated rules in their jobs suddenly become unable to understand basic cause and effect when their preferred party is implicated. People who can detect hypocrisy in an enemy at fifty meters by eye but need an ultra-high-resolution microscope and someone to hold their head to the eyepiece to notice it in themselves. People who demand peer-reviewed evidence from opponents will accept a screenshot, a rumour, and a vibes-based word-casserole from someone wearing the correct jersey.

This is not an intelligence shortage.

This is surrendered intelligence.

A shameful waste, in my precious opinion…

…That incredible hunk of shaped tofu inside their heads that can dream of the stars… left unemployed… because the argument became their identity and the only tools they reach for are emotional ones.

The autopsy table

This is why I care about arguments.

Not because comment sections are sacred temples of discourse. Please. Most of them are raccoon fights with login credentials.

I care because arguments reveal machinery.

A bad argument shows you what someone is assuming. What they think counts as evidence. What they are protecting. What they believe words are allowed to do. What shape they think reality has.

Take the old question: “If humans came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?”

The problem is not just that the question is wrong. Wrong is easy. I eat wrong for breakfast. The interesting part is the hidden model underneath it.

That question only makes sense if evolution is imagined as a ladder: monkey becomes ape becomes caveman becomes accountant becomes whatever we are now, presumably a species whose highest achievement is arguing about seed oils under a podcast clip.

But evolution is not a ladder. It is a branching tree.

That is the Frame Check. Find the shape of the argument. Once you see the bad frame, the question collapses. Not because you memorized a clever comeback, but because you found the model holding the whole thing upright.

That is what I mean by an argument autopsy.

I write autopsies of bad arguments, viral claims, and public nonsense. Not just to say, “This is wrong.” Wrong is often the least interesting part. The useful question is:

What did this argument have to assume in order to sound right?

That is where the organs are. That is where the hidden frame is. That is where the little machine is still twitching.

Why bother?

I guess that part is up to you.

It is your brain. You get to decide what you want it doing in there.

Will this make you better at smacking people around online when they refuse to admit the sky is blue because someone they dislike once praised the atmosphere? Sure. Probably. You will get better at finding the actual break in the argument instead of just throwing adjectives at it until everyone gets bored.

Will it help at Thanksgiving when someone unloads a claim so deranged that your brain briefly tries to exit through your ears? Also yes.

But those are the cheap prizes.

The real value of pulling bad arguments apart on a dissection table is seeing how the viscera and little squibbly bits inside connect together and “function.”

Because they do function. Sort of. Not well. Not cleanly. Not in a way that should pass inspection. But a bad argument usually has an internal logic. A little warped skeleton. A few organs attached to the wrong hoses. Some assumption under the floorboards pumping fluid into the whole awful thing.

That is what makes it useful.

Language is only a tool for moving thought from one skull to another. If you have not made sure the thought actually arrived, then arguing back is just wasting your breath + punctuation.

Argument autopsies force you to ask: what does this person think their words mean? What picture of reality makes this sentence feel true to them? What assumption is hiding under the floorboards?

And the second value is even better.

When I try to debunk a bad argument properly, I have to examine my own. I have to check whether my evidence actually supports what I believe. I have to find the exact error in the other person’s thinking without inventing a cheaper version of it just because that would be easier to hit.

That process has taught me more about my own beliefs — and the machinery that produced them — than almost anything else. Today I am very wise, if wisdom is defined as a memory full of your own mistakes.

But bad arguments are not just things to defeat.

Handled correctly, they are diagnostic equipment to analyze both arguers.

The expensive answer

To reason reasonably, you need more than intelligence.

• You need honesty to look at the evidence when it stops flattering you.

• You need bravery to follow the examination after it starts threatening one of your favourite beliefs.

• You need discipline to separate what was said from what you wish had been said.

• You need enough humility to say, “I don’t know,” before your mouth starts printing certainty on credit.

None of this is mystical. It is procedure.

1. Identify the claim.

2. Check the frame.

3. Look for the hidden assumption.

4. Separate evidence from vibes.

5. Notice when a label is doing the work of an argument.

6. Ask whether your own side is getting a discount.

Then keep going when the answer becomes inconvenient.

That is where most people fail. Not because the question was too hard. Because the answer was too expensive.

It cost too much ego. Too much tribal standing. Too much identity. Too much comfort. Too much of that warm narcotic feeling of being obviously right among people who already agree.

That is self-imposed ignorance.

Not honest ignorance. Honest ignorance is fine. Honest ignorance is workable. Honest ignorance says, “I don’t know, yet,” and leaves the door open.

Self-imposed ignorance welds the door shut and paints a flag on it.

Use the machine

I have abandoned arguments before where the other person was not incapable of understanding. That was the maddening part.

They had the equipment. You could see it. They had one of the most astonishing reasoning machines nature has ever produced, sitting right there behind their eyes, capable of reflection, pattern-recognition, self-correction, and all the rest of the strange primate magic.

And they would not use it.

Not couldn’t. Wouldn’t.

The argument would reach the place where the brain should wake up and say, “Hold on. Something here does not map.” Instead, the shutters came down.

The Triple-Digit IQ Club is not for geniuses.

It is for people willing to use the ordinary intelligence they already have.

• Especially when it is annoying, maybe even embarrassing.

• Especially when the argument comes from someone you dislike but happens to be structurally sound.

• Especially when the bad reasoning is coming from inside your own preferred little bunker.

• Especially when the tribe would rather you clap.

The standard is not brilliance. It’s function.

It’s not certainty. It’s inspection.

It’s not a heroic brain-score. It’s a refusal to let ordinary sanity die of cowardice.

That’s the club. You’re welcome in it.

I would like to scoop out Matt’s brain and take a looksee at it. Must be fascinating the way the gears turn and the intricate spring system, the empty wheel—the hamster long since dead.

But, I cannot answer “If Americans came from African Americans, why are there still African Americans”. On that question specifically, I am defeated. It’s too dumb to answer. So, I’m going to fix his question first, and then show that even when it’s fixed, it’s broken.

There is a little rotten seed of a good kernel of a question deep inside Matt’s model, and I’d like to dig it out and look at it, because it involves some super interesting history about human skin.

There is, inside Matt’s malformed question, a real one trying to get out. It is also dumb.

The root of this question, is the old:

Now, if you gave 1-million monkeys with 1-million cases of head-trauma 1-million typewriters, one of them would eventually type out the stupidest form of the question above:

That right there ⬆️ is the maximally-ignorant way to express this question.

Matt, impossibly, asked a maximalier one.

Trying to answer Matt’s actual question would be like trying to untie a thought-knot, and logic is hand-lubricant.

So, I’m going to answer the less stupid one… the stupidest one… because a one in a million monkey with brain damage isn’t the only one who can outsmart Matt on evolutionary science.

Matt’s Folly

I would like to understand Matt’s mindset. What model would you need to believe, for you to ask Matt’s question—without blushing yourself into the infrared in an attempt to become invisible to the human eye?

While his question makes my brain want to extrude out my ears and fling itself into traffic, it doesn’t actually sound stupid to him. People rarely hold beliefs they think are dumb. I have a few, but I only believe them with a bunch of tongues in my cheek.

Matt is not asking a stupid question inside his model of evolution. The problem is that his model allows him to ask nonsensical questions without realizing they are nonsensical. Like an alien from another dimension arriving in ours, experiencing colour for the first time, and asking what kind of fish is best for cleaning blue.

That is the problem. Matt’s model is broken. He doesn’t need to be taught “what evolution says” about his question. He needs a working model of evolution — so he can answer this question for himself.

Matt’s fundamental folly is that he believes one species “beats” another species, then supplants it—takes the older form’s place because it was fitter. He understands evolution as a ladder. But a ladder is a man-made construct. Nature, quite famously, doesn’t make man-made constructs.

He believes that all life on Earth is striving to graduate into evolution’s end goal: white Americans. This is a teleological error1 — treating evolution as if it is working toward a goal.

I would hate to think this has to actually be said, but:

TODAY’S white people and TODAY’S black people had the same grand-pappies, if you go back a few hundred dozen levels of grandparents. Their skin was black — in colour, not category — but that doesn’t mean that dark-skinned or African people today are any “closer” to that black ancestor of ours ~50 thousand years ago. Everybody today is just as far removed from our shared ancestors as everybody else. Some of us homo-saps just had our recent line of ancestors undergo a series of skin adaptations to suit their environment better.

Do English People Come From German People?

Nope. But language makes Matt’s ladder vs tree branching mistake easier to see.

English and German are related languages. They’re cousin languages. Once upon a time, people in an area spoke a language that had no name. Today, we call that name Flibbityfloop2. Some of those prehistoric Flibbityfloopic speakers sailed to an island, and began a civilization.

Over time, slowly, steadily, sometimes in bursts, both the island and mainland groups’ use of Flibbityfloop changed. The islanders needed words for things like tides, jellyfish, and “that hole on the top of whales they spit water from”. And the mainlanders needed words for mountain passes, wagon ruts, and the clan of horse-men who came from the East and ruined everyone’s day.

After 2,500 years of this, the people who stayed on the mainland are those who speak German today. The ones who went to the island are speaking English today.

English didn’t “come from” German. English and German share a common ancestor, called Flibbityfloop. But as can be deduced, even if they were not cousin languages, there would be no need for old Flibbityfloop to become an “extinct” language for English or German to exist today. Languages are not static, even when they stay the same language. (think: “six-seven”)

This is the evolutionary point. White people didn’t “come from” the black people of today. Today’s white people and today’s black people share older ancestors. One modern branch did not climb out of the other and leave it behind3.

Survival of the Rizziest:

“Survival of the fittest” is not the entire slogan. Its incompleteness leads a lot of people to an unclear understanding of what actually drives the process of evolution. The full slogan should be “survival of those who are the fittest for the environments they live in, and have more children than their peers who themselves survive long enough to reproduce.” In the context of evolution, you win at life if you have grandkids.

That means “fittest” cannot be answered in the abstract. Fittest where? Under what sun? Eating what food? Facing what risks? A trait that helps one population survive and reproduce in one environment can become a liability in another.

Which brings us to skin.

Why Be Black?

Two reasons. Vitamins B9, and D.
Funnily enough, they’re the same reasons for being white.

Our big beautiful yellow ball of Superman-food in the sky feels wonderful on the skin, but it’s actually a killer radiation cannon. Specifically the ultra-violet part of sunlight (UVB) has two interesting effects on us.

1. It stimulates your skin to create vitamin D (simplified but it’s correct enough for our understanding right now).

2. It degrades (breaks) folate, AKA vitamin B9.

So,

like virtually all things regarding life, a balance had to be reached.

We need vitamin D, because too little of it can cause rickets, soft bones, and other bone-development problems. But too much UV exposure can degrade folate, and folate matters for fertility, DNA-making, cell division, and fetal development.

Humans have a shield in our skin called melanin. It blocks UVB radiation, keeping UVB from damaging folate as it circulates near the surface of your skin where the sun does shine.

Too little melanin under a high-UV sun, and we start having statistically higher rates of health issues that prevent us from winning at life (having grandkids). But too much melanin under a low-UV sun, and your body may not get hit with enough UVB to synthesize a healthy amount of vitamin D.

So,

When some of our ancestors moseyed on out of Africa and up north, they first said goodbye to that closest, shared grandpappy, and then they started dying.

Why?

Lots of reasons, really. Fewer from malaria-laden mosquitoes, more from hangry bears. But humans who went to Europe had an additional problem. Less sun. The further away from the equator you get, the less direct the sun is hitting you, effectively causing you to absorb less sun. It’s SAD, really. (My promise to you as a writer, is that any article I write about the effects of melanin and UV radiation absorption in humans, is very likely to have a Seasonal-Affective-Disorder pun in it).

Not right away though. Because there is another source of vitamin D that can make up for the lower sun not kicking your body into making some. You can get it by eating critters whose skin has made vitamin D! That’s what early Europeans did. They ate a lot of fish and small game, so they got enough to make up for the lower amount the lower sun was causing their skin to make.

The surprising implication of this

Recent information has told us something incredibly interesting about Europeans. For most of the time people have lived in Europe, dark skin was the default colour humans came in. Humans have been in Europe for roughly 50,000 years.

The pigmentation-related genes changed, affecting how much melanin was produced and distributed, resulting in paler skin. While there would have been individuals born with lighter skin all throughout human history, evolution popularized “white people” in Europe around 8,000–10,000 years ago. It wasn’t a sudden thing, like someone who looks like a native of Ethiopia having a baby that looks like it came out of a typical Kansas home. It was a process that took many generations, and occurred at the population level, not the individual level.

Europeans weren’t all dark-skinned and then suddenly all had light-skinned babies that replaced them. Statistically, over time, the entire breeding population became lighter and lighter, because those who did got more sun, and would be more likely to have grandkids without cardboard skeletons.

In fact, skin became lighter precisely to the level that balanced the deaths from sunburnt folate with the deaths from a lack of vitamin D.

But why were white people invented only 8-10 thousand years ago if they were in Europe for ~50 thousand?

Well, they weren’t “invented.” There have always been humans born with different levels of skin pigment naturally, even in the same family.

What happened 8–10 thousand years ago, as far as we currently know, is that the pressure for less pigment became a consistent, aggregate evolutionary pressure. Over many generations, variants associated with less skin pigment became more common, and the population’s average skin colour became more and more pale.

Okay fine. Why were white people popularized in Europe only 8-10 thousand years ago if they were there for ~50 thousand?

This is the incredibly interesting part. It was because of the most impactful discovery humans have ever made. Planting and harvesting your own food. Agriculture. People in modern day Europe were hunter-gatherers for the first ~40,000 years. Their diets were heavy in D. Lots of fish and game.

But 10,000ish years ago, Anatolian-Aegean (modern day Turkey-Greece) Neolithic farmers brought agriculture into Europe, then mixed, traded, competed, and sometimes intercanoodled with local hunter-gatherer populations.

Plants, though, have extremely low levels of Vitamin D. So now, not only were Europeans (and the incoming pre-Turky Turks and pre-Greek Greeks) having their skin produce less Vitamin D because their dark skin was blocking UVB radiation… but now, settling down on the farm meant that they ate more plants, less game and fish.

This change in diet would have been a strong factor contributing to reaching the statistically-lethal breaking point. This drop in Vitamin D increased the rate of people being born with weak/soft bone issues, resulting in rickety kids, and osteomalacia (basically “adult-onset rickets”) in grown-ups.

There was now a STRONG evolutionary push for something to change. And what did change, is that the babies born with the genetics that resulted in less melanin production, had statistically fewer issues with their bones, and so had more kids passing that along.

So,
Evolution did what evolution does. Babies kept coming out with on average a hundred or so random mutations (that’s roughly how many there are in newly manufactured humans, after their parents’ DNA’s are unzipped and zipped back to make baby’s first double-helix), and natural selection weeded out more of the people born without the “fittest genes” for their environment.

Variants in genes like SLC24A5 and SLC45A2 became more common in European populations, contributing to reduced pigmentation. They lightened up, helping prevent SADness from the lack of sun.

So,
White skin is just an emergency response to living too far away from the middle of the Earth and not eating enough fish and game.

Matt’s question only exists because he thinks branches are rungs. He thinks one population should climb out of another, and the old one should vanish behind it. But evolution does not work that way. Populations branch, adapt, remain, mix, move, and change. Black people are still here for the same reason every other living branch is still here: they were never an obsolete rung on the way to Matt’s imagined destination.

I’m going to give my best-guess interpretation of their thinking, which would be required for this conversation to go any further.

Commenter is using their words not as a tool or even a weapon, but a shield to protect a ‘feeling’ about how things and people 'ought' to be. In that framework, the logic doesn’t technically matter—they are fashioning whatever syllables they can grab hold of into a weapon, and swinging wildly to ward off the reality that the world and other people can be different than they want them to be.

So let’s get to work, here...

My read on the commenter’s mental model of what “identifying as a man” means:

A person theatrically demanding recognition, inserting identity into every exchange, and treating social compliance as proof of reality.

Under that model, then yes, “identifying as a man makes me suspicious of you being one” becomes less insane. Still sloppy, but less insane. It becomes something like:

“A person who compulsively performs an identity probably does not naturally inhabit that identity.”

That version is at least arguable. Not automatically true, but structurally legible. I see this all over in online “conversations”, and I like to call it attacking a target in a bottle.

Yes, certainly, ‘myself’ is an anecdotal sample-size of 1. But TO me, I am the whole of my internal reality. To ME specifically, there is no better evidence possible about how I feel my own self-testimony of me to me.

Do I HAVE to identify as a man?

Well, sort of...
but that’s only because I do.

Do you HAVE to believe that you live on Earth?

I formally identify as the formerly unidentified entity who will have had written this writing on entity identity identification

“Identify as” can mean several things. It can be performance, a demand, a description, a category-fit, a social request, a political posture, or a simple self-report. You do not get to collapse all versions into the most annoying one and then rail against identity as a concept.

When I “Identify as a man”, I am not making a declaration about what bucket I BELONG in. I’m looking at what our general societal picture of traits and statistical norms we label as a “man”, and seeing that as a described category of gender, that one is describing how I happen to see and feel about myself internally as a person.

So, if you ask me “Hey - what gender do you identify as?”, I IDENTIFY as a man.

I HAVE to.

The only way I could NOT identify as a man, is if I identified as something else or identified as no gender at all, which I don’t, so I do, because I am.

So, I found myself with two things:

1. A question.
2. A remaining monthly AI agent in an AI pro subscription.

I decided my question needed to be answered. So, I had the AI Agent do some research for me, to find the raw data I would need for my calculations.

While yes, I do realize that this knowledge has likely cost the Earth a quarter teaspoon of water to slake the thirst of the AI datacenters, I also think it was worth it. It was worth it for the science.

• Documented and estimated human deaths by great cats by country

• Whether the victim was from there or a different country (eg tourist).

• Work out each country with fatal attacks’

  • Native English speaking rate.

  • Nationality breakdown of tourists and other non natives in a given country over the year of a given fatality.

• Using this info, work out an estimate on the likelihood of each given fatal cat-attack having happened to someone who could speak English.

After some processing time, the number it spat back was 3,000.

Job completed, I deleted the digital agent to release it back to its Mr. Meeseeks void.

ever, even for a split-moment,
thought to themselves: “This is a cat-astrophe! Ha!”?

Abstract done, we can now do the math

I won’t bore you with the math, but since we now know (“know”) that 3,000 of these felonious feline harrowing homo homicides have happened, we also know that if this final-pun has ever occurred, it occurred in at least 1 in these 3,000 times.

Therefore, even if the rate of people dying from cat-attacks while thinking “this is a cat-astrophe!" is as low as 0.033%, it has likely actually (63% chance) happened.
